LOUD, LOUDER, LOUDEST!!!

en Taiko is a Japanese drumming group of youth drummers. The group started activities in Portland, Oregon, in 2007 as an effort to introduce Japanese culture to local communities. The group carries on a centuries-old musical tradition from Japan, and performs at various cultural events. en Taiko plays not only Japanese traditional style taiko, but also shares the exploration of a new art form such as collaborative music creation with taiko and marimba. Audience will enjoy experiencing the taiko drumming at the end of the performance!

11am Tea Ceremony with Margie Yap

Marjorie Yap and Issoan Tea School will present a demonstration of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Join us as we show how to incorporate harmony, respect, purity and tranquility in modern life.

Marjorie Yap has more than 40 years experience with Chado, the Way of Japanese Tea Ceremony. She studied in Kyoto, Japan at the Urasenke headquarters and received her teaching credentials and tea artistic name, Soya, from the 16th generation Urasenke Grand Tea Master. She has performed Tea Ceremony at the Portland Japanese Garden and numerous public and private events both in the U.S. and in Japan. She has assisted teaching the Chado and Japanese Aesthetics course at the University of Washington, and was guest lecturer at Portland Community College in Tea Ceramics and Tea Ceremony and Theater at Sarah Lawrence College. She now teaches Chado in her home in NW Portland.

12pm White Lotus Dragon Dancers

This performance by White Lotus is an all-in-one package. We'll have a drum show, multi lions, dragon and our grand finale, Lion Dance across high poles!

White Lotus is dedicated to being Portland's iconic Dragon & Lion Dance organization. We are an AAPI youth organization that brings the art of Dragon & Lion Dancing in its purest form through the Pacific Northwest. The Dragon & Lion Dance is meant to scare away evil spirits and bring in good luck, joy and prosperity. Our team specializes in acrobatic performances for all celebrations!

White Lotus Foundation

1pm Ikebana Demonstration with Nana Bellerud

Through her demonstrations, Nana seeks to introduce the audience to the art of ikebana and to intrigue and inspire them.  Beyond simply producing a beautiful work of art with flowers and natural objects, she shows her audience how ikebana explores artistic concepts such as balance, contrast, and negative space.

Nana Goto Bellerud has been studying the Sogetsu School of ikebana since 2005 and continues to be inspired and have new insights from its teachings.  Nana demonstrates, exhibits, and teaches ikebana in-person and virtually at a wide range of venues including the Portland Art Museum, Portland Japanese Garden, and Gresham Japanese Garden.  Nana is currently serving as Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland and President of Ikebana International Portland Chapter #47.

2pm Oregon Koto-Kai Dueling Koto

Enjoy koto (Japanese harp with over 1000 year history) music in classical style to contemporary. Oregon Koto-Kai provides soothing yet dramatic music from the traditional musical instrument.

Blending traditional and modern sounds of the Japanese koto, we inspire players and our community with musical performances and cultural collaborations throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Oregon Koto-Kai (OKK), founded by Tokyo-born koto master Mitsuki Dazai, is one of the very few koto ensemble groups in the Pacific Northwest, providing Japanese koto (harp) music, ranging from traditional to contemporary, including well-known Western music from classical to pop.

3pm Hula Hualau ‘Ohana Holo’oko’a

Hula Halau ʻOhana Holoʻokoʻa will be sharing the rich Hawaiian culture and will be taking you throughout the Hawaiian islands and Tahiti. The school is celebrating their 25th year and has grown to over 100 students in 13 classes ranging in age from 3 to 90 years old.  Since the pandemic she now has students across the U.S.  Lisa loves sharing the aloha spirit and the inclusivity you feel when learning about hula and the Hawaiian culture.  She looks forward welcoming students of all ages, genders, nationalities and experience levels to join their hula and Tahitian family.
